Incessant rains hit Uttarakhand, Manikarnika temple swept away

Continuous rains marred the Hindu month of 'Shravan', an occasion the devotees chose to visit the famous Manikarnika temple in Uttarkashi.

DEHRADUN: The famous Manikarnika temple was on Friday swept away by the strong currents of the Bhagirathi river following torrential rains in Uttarakhand, according to media reports.

Continuous rains marred the Hindu month of 'Shravan', an occasion the devotees chose to visit the famous Manikarnika temple in Uttarkashi.

The priest of the Manikarnika temple, Suresh Shastri confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries due to heavy rains.

In another incident, a sub-divisional magistrate of Almora, Ajay Arora fell in the raging Mandakini river as he slipped off a makeshift bridge.

Efforts to rescue the magistrate have begun.  A 14-member team of trained PAC divers along with the National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) personnel are involved in the search operation.

Arora was returning from the Himalayan shrine of Kedarnath to Garurchatti base camp on Wednesday before he fell in the river.
